This is a lovely Reindeer drum that was hand dyed using natural ground plant pigments and comes with a mallet. The handle on the back is deer antler.
This drum was reverse dyed, meaning that when dying hide there is a smooth side and a rougher side and usually the smoother side is favoured, however in this case I choose to dye the rough side for this drum thus creating the unique offering you see here.

The hide itself was brought to Canada from Finland for me by Tuvan shaman Christiana Harle, and treated with much respect and honouring as it is a beautiful gift to be able to have reindeer hide at this time.

Reindeer:
For the Sami shamanic people of Siberia, the drum is the most important shamanic object because the sounds a shaman makes with it permit them to summon and ride into the other world to speak with the spirits. The Tuvan drum is closely associated with reindeer, the riding of which facilitated the shaman's ability to go on journeys, and was the source of the shaman's strength.

The reindeer itself is a family-oriented totem, that offers us lessons in communication, both with humans and the with the spirit world. Reindeer symbolize wisdom, resourcefulness, cleverness, knowledge, and creativity. They are honoured for their nobility and representing continuation of the tribe. Other members of herbivorous Cervidae family are Caribou, deer, elk and moose. Each member has its own unique symbolism based on its attributes.

Reindeer medicine people are skillful at teaching and guiding others and contain an innocent demeanour that is helpful to their friends and family members. Receptive to the needs of others this totem teaches how to adapt to community concerns. "All for one, and One for all" could easily be the motto for this totem. If you are called by reindeer perhaps you are being asked to take a step into a new role, either spiritual or leadership.

Reindeer hide is quite thin and easily affected by moisture. However when it is heated up and dry, it sings and sounds amazing.
